An estimated one million pilgrims — varkaris traveling with the palkhi or independent travelers — journey to Pandharpur each year, creating a profound cultural and economic fabric across Maharashtra.
The Dnyaneshwar palkhi is managed by the hereditary Chopdars and the Alandi Devasthan Trust. The wari schedule is published in advance and is strictly adhered to, ensuring a seamless sacred journey.

800 years of devotion — the sacred Palkhi pilgrimage to Pandharpur
According to tradition, the Wari to visit Pandharpur began over 800 years ago. The Warkari saint Dnyaneshwar's lineage carried forward this sacred journey in the Hindu months of Ashadha and Kartik, which continues to this day.
The Warkari movement, rooted in the Bhakti tradition, embraces devotion to Vitthal (Vithoba) of Pandharpur. Saints like Dnyaneshwar, Namdev, Eknath, and Tukaram composed abhangas (devotional hymns) that form the spiritual heart of the Waari.
The centerpiece of the Waari is the Palkhi — a palanquin carrying the padukas (sandals) of the saints. Two major Palkhis leave each year: the Dnyaneshwar Palkhi from Alandi and the Tukaram Palkhi from Dehu, both converging on Pandharpur for Ashadhi Ekadashi.
The Dnyaneshwar Palkhi is managed by the hereditary Chopdars and the Alandi Devasthan Trust. The Wari schedule is published in advance and strictly adhered to, ensuring a seamless sacred journey across hundreds of kilometres.
The Pune–Pandharpur route is divided into tapas (journey segments). Each tappa covers a portion of the route, typically one day's walk. Warkaris can enroll for individual tapas or the entire journey, joining the Dindi (group) for their chosen segment.
The route passes through many sacred towns and villages, with each stop holding religious significance. Local communities along the route provide food, water, and hospitality to the Warkaris.
Darshan of Vitthal at Pandharpur is believed to grant moksha (liberation). The collective chanting of "Vitthal Vitthal" during the Waari creates a powerful spiritual atmosphere.
The Waari transcends caste, class, and region. Millions of Warkaris from all walks of life walk together in brotherhood, embodying the teachings of the Bhakti saints.
An estimated one million pilgrims journey to Pandharpur each year, creating a profound cultural and economic fabric across Maharashtra.
